Slic3r or Kiss with Linux Ubuntu

Post: #5904 vetsgarage

With the help of a youtube video- I managed to install Pronterface on an old pentium 4 machine running Linux (Ubuintu13). I was able to verify that it connected and I was able to move the axis. It appears to be a good install.

I am now trying to install slic3r or Kiss slic3r on the same machine. I am bit confused as to which I should use.

Has anyone sucessuflly install slic3r or Kiss on Ubuntu? Is there a good guide or video?

I looked through the forum and did not see much written about this. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't use KISSlicer. It's abandonware. Slic3r is nicer and might not be very power hungry.

You could also consider Cura, but Cura might eat up more cycles than your p4 might have available.

Thanks for your input. I will pass your advice to others in the group for discussion. Like most relative beginners, we have big ideas and little experience.

I need to point out that I could be wrong here wrt power consumption. Some versions of Slic3r are very power hungry.

I use SLic3r under Ubuntu 14.04. I followed these instructions : http://entropyprojects.blogspot.com/201 ... ry-pi.html . The apt-get commands can all be combined into one command.

Also, when WX is compiling, it opens a bunch of pop-up test windows. This shouldn't be a problem on a laptop or desktop, but if VNC'd or X11'd into a remote machine, like a Raspberry Pi, Display 0 can be an issue.

As an update, a new version of KISSlicer is supposedly around the corner. We're still eying Cura as a replacement default supported slicer, but I have nothing to report at the moment.

We have a new version of Cura for Debian, that installs nicely on Ubuntu.
