I have fought inconsistent extrusion for a while with my Series 1. Replaced the extruder driver with the DRV8825, went back to the A4988, Moved up to the black edition of the A4988. Put a fan on the drivers. Changed out the extruder motor with a new NEMA 14. But still i would get random skipping and weak extrusion. Sometimes it would work great and sometimes it would go weak and skip in the middle of a print, then go back to normal.
I finally decided to buy a high torque NEMA 14 motor from www.omc-stepperonline.com. This is a 56 oz-in motor in a NEMA 14 size (longer than the original NEMA 14). What a difference. My latest 8 hour print is flawless. Extrusion was consistent and really high quality. A fabulous upgrade at $20.
For everyone's info it is listed at $13.96 + shipping at http://www.omc-stepperonline.com Part number 14HS20-1504S
1.5A so i would highly recommend you upgrade to the black edition of the pololu A4988. It has a higher amperage capacity and heat tolerence.
May not be for everyone, but if you have fought with inconsistent extrusion but have not been able to fix it any other way, here is an easy and inexpensive solution.

somehow in amperes it is more powerful than these new motors
to calculate only found a reference to the formula
А*0,4

Re: Replaced extruder motor, AMAZING difference
I am running it at 0.51. That seemed to be the smoothest when i tuned it. And the motor doesn't even get very warm, even during a 14 hour print. Unlike the original motor, which would be really hot, even running at 0.42.

I change X motors and Extruder motors. Work good. but need more test. Y motors change in next time
Re: Replaced extruder motor, AMAZING difference
There seems to be a lot of friction between the filament spool and it's holder, the filament also drags along the front top edge of the cross support bar over the extruder. I wonder if the Series 1 designers experimented with bearings to reduce this friction.
